APRIL CHAPTER MEETING

Our Mizuhiki workshop was conducted by Mrs. Haruko Shimizu on April 21 around 12:00 PM after a business meeting which started at 11:00 PM. She was assisted by Kazumi Shimizu (I.I. member). We had 23 participants and we collected $5.00 for materials (Mizuhiki).

Most people had never experienced Mizuhiki Zaiku. She showed us first how to knot 5 strings together, flat so you can see all five strings straight and not bent. You cannot twist or bend any of the strings. We were allowed to combine any colors; some chose all gold, gold & silver, X’mas colors and all red or multiple colors.

Mrs. Shimizu was planning to teach us how to make a crane, the symbol of peace, however, it turned out to be a little too hard to make it within our scheduled time. But we were grateful that we learned ‘awabi tie’.
Mrs. Shimizu called me a couple of days later to tell me that she felt very bad that she didn’t teach us how to make a crane so she made bookmarks and other Mizuhiki Zaiku and wants me to give them to the workshop participants.

If you were a participant of the Mizuhiki workshop, please see me at the May chapter meeting. There will be six extra Mizuhiki Zaiku which will be raffled out during the May chapter meeting.

For more information about the Mizuhiki class, call Nikkei Horizons Manager, Rie Taki at 206-726-6469 or email nhinfo@nikkeiconcerns.org.
